Main changes of stainless steel suppliers and market in China during 2019![]() In 2019, China’s stainless steel suppliers went through a phase of rapid expansion. Production grew strongly, pushing China to account for more than half of global output. Major mills scaled up capacity and even expanded overseas—especially into Indonesia—to secure nickel supply. At the same time, many producers shifted toward lower-cost 200-series stainless steel, focusing on price competitiveness and tighter control over raw materials.
However, this growth created imbalance. Supply increased faster than demand, leading to oversupply across the market. As a result, prices—particularly for lower-grade products—declined throughout the year, and inventories built up. Profit margins for suppliers came under pressure, forcing some to adjust production or compete more aggressively on price.
On the trade side, conditions were also challenging. Exports weakened due to rising global protectionism and anti-dumping measures, while imports dropped sharply. Although domestic demand in China continued to grow, it wasn’t strong enough to absorb the surge in output.
Overall, 2019 can be seen as a year of aggressive expansion but increasing pressure—suppliers became larger and more globally integrated, yet faced a more competitive, oversupplied, and lower-margin market. 【 Go Back 】 | 【 Print 】 | 【 Close this window 】 |
